The daunting five digit fee structure of US universities is making a lot of headlines nowadays. According to the surveys, the average fee to study at a four-year private (non-profit) university in the US is now US$28,500 per year.

Universities such as Cornell charged an undergraduate fee of $41,541 for the year 2011-12. Other expenses including food, accommodation, books and resources etc costs around $60,000 per year.

This amount is significantly more than the average US annual salary. Multiply by four for the full course, it seems almost impossible.

But don’t worry. This is not the case with all Universities. Some Universities charge much less fee than the above. Moreover, that average refers only to private universities, which are typically more expensive than public colleges and universities.

State colleges charge two rates: one for everyone else and one for state residents.

The average fee charged for a public four year University including out-of-state surcharges is currently $20,770 per year. But 44% of the American students who are enrolled at a four-year college as full time under graduates are paying less than $9,000 per year.

The cheapest option avail is getting registered at public-sector two-year institutes, profoundly called as City, Technical, or Community Colleges. The average tuition charged here is $2527 per year and the lowest is $560.

This cannot be considered as a full-time degree, but one can gain an associate’s degree and this count as the first half of a bachelor’s degree. To complete the remaining half, students can transfer to another University can then be completed by transferring to a university for further two to three years.

Remember that highly ranked public colleges such as Los Angles (UCLA) and the University of California are increasingly expensive as they are competitive.

All subjects are not equal: ‘differential’ fees

US Universities charge different amounts for different courses. This fee structure depends upon various factors such as the starting salaries students can expect after the graduation, actual course costs, and the demand.

For the year 2010-11, 143 US Universities offered under graduate degrees with various fee structures. Now more than half of public Universities are following differential fees for at least one of their undergraduate course.

Concerns are already being raised against the differential fees, as some subjects are no longer accessible to those from lower-income backgrounds.

Foreign students can work for 20 hrs per week and 40 hrs per week during summer. Students may be allowed to work out of campus (internship) after nine months (2 semesters) of their arrival at USA. Students receiving any type of aid like TA/RA/Fellowship or GA need not have to worry about costs. Students not receiving any kind of aid must be prepared for tuition fees and living cost for initial 2-3 months. Also note that in some universities like University of Missouri-Rolla and University of Texas Arlington there is huge shortage of P/T jobs. So students planning to go to these universities must either have Scholarships or adequate Funds. It's better to contact current students via email for latest information. For many universities students can pay the fees of their last semester even after graduation.

Some Universities grant tuition waiver after first semester (if performance in 1st semester is good). It is also possible that some other department may offer scholarship (Like you might be doing MBA but you might find a software job in Medical college and they might offer you scholarships).
