The daunting five digit fee structure of US universities is making a lot of headlines nowadays. According to the surveys, the average fee to study at a four-year private (non-profit) university in the US is now US$28,500 per year.
Universities such as Cornell charged an undergraduate fee of $41,541 for the year 2011-12. Other expenses including food, accommodation, books and resources etc costs around $60,000 per year.
This amount is significantly more than the average US annual salary. Multiply by four for the full course, it seems almost impossible.
But don’t worry. This is not the case with all Universities. Some Universities charge much less fee than the above. Moreover, that average refers only to private universities, which are typically more expensive than public colleges and universities.
State colleges charge two rates: one for everyone else and one for state residents.
The average fee charged for a public four year University including out-of-state surcharges is currently $20,770 per year. But 44% of the American students who are enrolled at a four-year college as full time under graduates are paying less than $9,000 per year.
The cheapest option avail is getting registered at public-sector two-year institutes, profoundly called as City, Technical, or Community Colleges. The average tuition charged here is $2527 per year and the lowest is $560.
This cannot be considered as a full-time degree, but one can gain an associate’s degree and this count as the first half of a bachelor’s degree. To complete the remaining half, students can transfer to another University can then be completed by transferring to a university for further two to three years.
Remember that highly ranked public colleges such as Los Angles (UCLA) and the University of California are increasingly expensive as they are competitive.
All subjects are not equal: ‘differential’ fees
US Universities charge different amounts for different courses. This fee structure depends upon various factors such as the starting salaries students can expect after the graduation, actual course costs, and the demand.
For the year 2010-11, 143 US Universities offered under graduate degrees with various fee structures. Now more than half of public Universities are following differential fees for at least one of their undergraduate course.
Concerns are already being raised against the differential fees, as some subjects are no longer accessible to those from lower-income backgrounds.
A. Cost of Application:
a. Application Fees: $50 to $150 per University
b. Courier Charges: Rs 1200 to Rs 1500 per University (US Universities need hard copies of your authenticated documents like transcripts, recommendation letters, etc.)
c. Academic Test: Academic entrance examinations will cost you around $100 to $200 per examination, and most students take at least 2 tests. Assume that you will be spending at least $500 on tests.
d. Score Reporting: Test scores like GMAT, GRE, SAT, TOEFL, IELTS have to be reported by the testing agencies (like ETS), which may cost up to $ 20 per University (an average cost for reporting scores of all tests you may have taken).
Living Expenses
Estimated Living Cost: $10000 to $12000 (per year). An average of $700 to $1000 per month should be considered as safe
This includes your accommodation (room and board), travel, food, some books, some clothing and may be some entertainment expense too.
Please find below a range of costs that have been considered while estimating the above listed living expenses:
a. Books and study materials will cost $500 to $1000 approximately per academic year.
b. Travel costs within the US will be between $300 and $700 approximately.
Room and Board will cost between $3000 and $7500 approximately per year. Allow an additional $1000 to $2000 for vacation periods when the dormitory might be closed.
If you will be living off campus, the cost of renting an apartment will be between $300 and $600 a month, but could be much higher contingent on the location of the school. Meals should cost about $2500 a year, assuming that you do not fancy too many outings.
Clothing will cost $500 or more annually (if you go to cold place, you better buy some clothes that suit their weather; otherwise you may shiver).
Personal expenses will cost around $2000 approximately per year.
The College Board publishes college costs, required admissions tests, and other useful information in The International Student Handbook of US Colleges.
C. Other Costs:
Air tickets: $500 to $2000 (depending when you finish your admission process and / or book tickets)
Health / Medical Insurance: $300 to $500 per year per person
Car: If you wish to buy a car, assume that it will cost you around $4000 a year
Family Member: If you take along other family members with you, assume that your annual expenses will increase about 15% or $5000 approximately for each additional family member.
The cost of the study per year (Tuition and fees, does not include living expenses) in USA varies from $5000 to $50000 (might be much more too for MBA/Medical or other programs) per year. The cost of living depends on the location. For example States like Washington, California and area around New York is costly. In general cost of living for students from countries like India, Bangladesh, China, Taiwan may vary from $6000 to $14000 (per year). It is assumed that students will live in shared apartments, live out of campus and have less telephone bills and other expenses are at bay. Most of all expenses can be met while working on on-campus jobs. The hourly pay for on-campus job varies from $5.15 to $15 per (sometimes it may be $20) hour. Foreign students can work for 20 hrs per week and 40 hrs per week during summer. Students may be allowed to work out of campus (internship) after nine months (2 semesters) of their arrival at USA. Students receiving any type of aid like TA/RA/Fellowship or GA need not have to worry about costs. Students not receiving any kind of aid must be prepared for tuition fees and living cost for initial 2-3 months. Also note that in some universities like University of Missouri-Rolla and University of Texas Arlington there is huge shortage of P/T jobs. So students planning to go to these universities must either have Scholarships or adequate Funds. It's better to contact current students via email for latest information. For many universities students can pay the fees of their last semester even after graduation.
Some Universities grant tuition waiver after first semester (if performance in 1st semester is good). It is also possible that some other department may offer scholarship (Like you might be doing MBA but you might find a software job in Medical college and they might offer you scholarships).
